The Goal: To provide food for your pets that's not too far removed from your dinner table.
The Problem: Food that fresh will spoil in just a few days. Moreover, it may not be the best mixture for your pets.
The traditional products: Toss anything in the mix, cook it, add enough preservatives and hope it works.
Pet lovers have instinctively known that there had to be a better way.
When enough of us made our voices heard, a few manufacturers realized the need and the market potential for a quality product. Keeping it cheap was not the goal.
So, how can you tell when a processed pet food is really one that you want to use?
For a detailed discussion, we suggest you visit one of our vendors, Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul FAQ section.
We also carry pet foods that literally are marked as "fit for human consumption."
One of our favorites is "Go Natural."
In the end, the summary ideas are:
1). Ingredients matter. The proper ratios of protein, fat and fiber need to be chosen in ways that are appropriate for your pet's size and age.
2). Process matters: In order to offer a nutrient dense pet food to you that does not require refrigeration, the food manufacturer must either can the food or use preservatives that do not harm your pet. Salt, Vitamin-E, Vitamin-C and other preservatives that you might not recognize by their formal names can get the job done, but they cost more.
Mixed tocopherols (vitamin E) , ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and rosemary extract in some of the formulas have preservative effects. Avoid foods with chemical preservatives.
If you have any concerns about the definition or nature of the ingredients of the pet foods we offer, we suggest that you vist the detailed Ingredient Glossary at Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul.
3). Your Behavior Matters: Be consistent in introducing new foods to your pet's diet. Their systems don't respond as quickly as yours and dietary changes on the pace that you enjoy will often lead to loose stools and erratic behavior.
